Other creative projects and activities Eva enjoyed, recently: WIDC 2011 Women in the Director’s Chair
I was thrilled to have been selected to attend the very prestigious Women in the Director’s Chair 2011 at the Banff Centre. This excellent directing program for mid-career women directors started with a short module in November where we refined our scene. It culminated in a 3 week very intensive shooting and directing workshop in January 2011. Inspired and enriched, I am now working on 2 new script ideas and am in pre-production for a new short film. Beneath the Ice, 2011
My youth play BENEATH THE ICE received another beautiful production under the creative direction of Tracy Carroll of The Cookie, during Jan. – Feb. 2011. The new cast included Zina Lee, Eric Wigston and Alison Wells; with Skye Perry (Stage Manager), Dave Clarke (Sound Design), Eva Colmers (shadow imagery/ projection) and Mike Ford (production manager) After a successful run at the Westbury Theatre, BENEATH THE ICE toured to a few selected schools around Edmonton. The new script and production drew heavily upon my research and experience in shadow theatre and received a script re-development workshop through Alberta Playwrights Network. Shakespeare's Will (German translation)
Eva’s translation of Shakespeare’s Will by Governor General award-winning playwright Vern Thiessen received its first German production at Theater Wrede in Oldenburg, Germany on October 28, 2010. The playwright and Eva attended this premiere and greatly enjoyed the German production directed by Gudrun H. Lelek with Marga Koop (Anne Hathaway). Eva’s German translation was supported by BILTC – Banff International Literary Translation Centre where she has spent 3 weeks in a translation residency. Beneath the Ice, 2009 In January 2009, I traveled with Tracy Carroll to the small Inuit community of Kangiqsujuaq to do research for my family play, Beneath the Ice. This far away place without trees and endlessly wide, open whiteness was magical and peaceful and with caring, creative people. The trip was supported by Canada Council for the Art and was crucial to the creation of my unique story. Beneath the Ice premiered at the Westbury Theatre as part of the Fringe Theatre Adventure’s season and had a very successful run from March 10 – 15, 2009. It was directed by Tracy Carroll and starred Brendan Meyer, Lisa Truong and Alison Wells. Set & Costume was designed by Marissa Kochanski, Lighting by Guido Tondino. The unique soundscape was created by Dave Clarke and Matt Skopyk. The play is available for production, and interested theatre companies can contact: Mosquers Film Fest A highlight in 2009, was Eva’s engagement with the new, very creative Mosquers Society in Edmonton which encourages Albertans of Muslim background to make short films about what it is like to be Muslim in Canada. Initially, Eva taught a directing workshop for the society - attended by a big crowd of aspiring Islamic young filmmakers ranging from age 9 – 29. Consequently, she had the honour to be one of the judges during the Mosquers Film Fest where all submitted work received its public premiere at the Myer Horowitz Theatre on May 30, 2009.
